About
Ten artists are sought to participate in a two-month international residency in Rio de Janeiro investigating artistic practices across expanded media and disciplines, with studio access, curatorial support, and culmination in a collective exhibition.
Overview
Expanded Field — Itinera Arte International Artist Residency Program investigates artistic practices at the intersection of languages, media, and regimes of visibility. The program welcomes artists whose research challenges stable disciplinary boundaries, moving between painting, sculpture, photography, performance, video, sound, writing, installation, and other hybrid or experimental practices. The title references Rosalind Krauss's essay Sculpture in the Expanded Field (1979). Ten artists will be selected. The residency understands the expanded field not only as a formal or linguistic question but also as a geographic and symbolic one, interested in how contemporary artistic practices engage with multiple territorialities, questioning notions of belonging, displacement, borders, and coexistence.

Eligibility
Open to artists at any career stage from Brazil and abroad with an active contemporary artistic practice who can communicate in English or Portuguese. Applicants must be available to participate in the full residency period and program activities, including curatorial meetings, group exchanges, visits, and the final collective exhibition/open studio.
What's included
Participants have access to studio space in downtown Rio de Janeiro, weekly curatorial guidance, portfolio reviews, critical follow-up, conversations with invited curators and art professionals, visits to studios/galleries/exhibitions/cultural institutions, and institutional promotion through Itinera Arte's communication channels. The program culminates in a collective exhibition and open studio presenting works and processes developed during the residency.
Fees
- Non-Brazilian artists: €1,100 (individual studio) or €850 (shared studio) for two months
- Brazilian artists: R$2,500 (shared studio) for two months — approximately 50% waiver of full fee
- Fees do not include accommodation, travel, meals, production materials, local transportation, or personal expenses
Scholarships
Two full scholarships available for artists residing in Brazil. Scholarship selection considers socioeconomic vulnerability, race and/or gender, as well as relevance of the candidate's CV and alignment of their work with the conceptual framework of the residency. Candidates applying for a full scholarship must submit an additional letter explaining their motivation to participate and their need for financial support.
Housing and facilities
No housing is provided; Itinera Arte offers support with information and guidance regarding accommodation options and practical recommendations about Rio de Janeiro. The residency includes private and shared studios, painting workspace, drawing benches, exhibition/installation space, and performance/presentation facilities. The venue is partially accessible (50% or more).
