Overview
Beyond the Surface is a national juried exhibition exploring the limitless possibilities that emerge when artists combine materials, techniques, and ideas. Mixed media artwork combines two or more artistic materials, techniques, or processes within a single piece, incorporating painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage, fiber, found objects, digital elements, assemblage, sculpture, and other creative approaches.
Key dates
- Submissions due: August 16, 2026, 11:59 PM
- Notifications made: August 18, 2026
- Delivery of work: No later than September 1, 2026
- Exhibition opening: September 8, 2026
- Artists' reception: October 3, 2026
- Exhibition closing: October 31, 2026
- Artwork pickup: After October 31 (flexible, details will be emailed)
Eligibility
Open to all artists residing in the United States, age 18 and older. Work must be created within the last 5 years and not previously shown at The Art Center.
Media & size restrictions
2D framed work and 3D work accepted. 3D work requiring pedestals must not exceed 36"H and fit within a 16" footprint. Larger floor standing 3D work encouraged and not subject to the same size restrictions. All artwork must be for sale. Digital submissions must be JPEGs only, 300 dpi minimum, at least 1200 pixels in one direction.
Submissions
Up to 3 original works per artist accepted. If submitting more than one work, both the art and framing must be consistent and works should be from a series or complement each other. Selected artwork must be delivered ready to hang/install.
Entry fee
- Non-Members: $30 USD for up to 3 submissions
- Art Center Members: No entry fee (membership must be current)
Awards
- Best in Show: Awarded to artwork demonstrating exceptional creativity, technical achievement, and overall excellence in mixed media
- Juror's Choice Award: Selected by juror Dennis Cardalisco in recognition of outstanding artistic merit, originality, and creative expression
- People's Choice Award: Selected by exhibition visitors for the work receiving the most votes
