About
Artists are invited to propose site-specific visual, performance, or time-based community-based arts projects focused on climate resilience and coastal flooding awareness.
Overview
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are seeking proposals for four site-specific visual, performance, or time-based projects from artists who live in or near New Jersey for community-focused arts engagements. These opportunities are ideal for teaching artists and those with socially-engaged and/or environmentally-focused artmaking practices.
Key Dates
- Submission deadline: July 30, 2026
Eligibility
- Must be 18 years or older
- Not enrolled in an educational institution
- Current resident of New Jersey or living within 100 miles of the New Jersey state border
The Opportunity
Project budgets of $24,000 per artist are provided, with some community partners potentially providing additional and/or in-kind project support. The budget should cover all costs, including artists' time and fees, materials, travel, documentation, etc. Four community-based organizations (CBOs) focused on coastal risk communication will be paired with selected artists to collaborate on projects that engage the community in the artmaking process and communicate coastal flooding risks and preparedness strategies.
Project Requirements
- Site-specific and community-engaged design
- Visual artists must include community engagement, not just show finished work
- Performance proposals should indicate how the artist will work with the community on development and execution
- Time-based works must engage the community in development and ideally during presentation
- Community engagement approaches may include: talks, tours, workshops, hands-on artmaking, surveys, materials collections, meetings, performances
- Projects must communicate coastal hazard impacts and risks, and actions for mitigation
- No new environmental disturbance or harm in sensitive areas
- Any art form considered if it meets CBO needs
