San Marcos Downtown Mural Gallery Call for Artists

Overview

The City of San Marcos Mural Arts Program is commissioning local visual artists to design and paint 8' x 4' panels for an outdoor mural gallery at 111 MLK Drive. Eight new artists will be selected to each paint one panel. The project aims to beautify the downtown area, add to the growing collection of public art, and deter graffiti.

Key dates

• July 20, 11:59 p.m. CDT: Submission deadline
• Aug. 17: Artist notification
• Aug. 27-29: Panel pickup
• Oct. 12: Panel completion
• TBD: Panel delivery and installation

Eligibility

Open to artists or artist teams who live in San Marcos or Hays County, Texas, aged 18 and over.

Media & format

Submissions must be made electronically via CaFE and include: a rough sketch and concept narrative (must be proportional to panel dimensions), contact information and artist statement or background, and examples of up to five relevant images or reviews of similar work.

Project requirements

The project must display imagery that expresses the vibe and vibrancy of San Marcos. Panels will be provided by the City; artists will paint them at their homes or studios, then deliver to the City at a designated time. The City will provide top coat to be applied by the artists.

Selection criteria

• Artistic merit of concept and design
• Appropriateness of the design for the location, including scale, content, and color
• Artist's qualifications
• Originality of the design

Award

Selected artists will receive a $1,000 artist stipend, inclusive of materials.
