Overview
Buinho is an artistic residency program located in the Alentejo region of Southern Portugal. Since its inception in 2016, it has grown to host eight distinct houses and spaces offering shared and private studios, digital fabrication workshops, metalworking facilities, and exhibition spaces. The program welcomes creatives from diverse backgrounds including visual artists, performance artists, photographers, curators, writers, sculptors, designers, and media artists.
Residency Details
- Length: 2 weeks to 2 months
- Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese
- Average number of artists in residence at a time: 6
- Housing: Private housing on campus (individual apartment/cabin/house) or private bedroom in shared facility
- Meals: Shared and private kitchen access
Facilities & Equipment
The residency offers access to a state-of-the-art digital fabrication workshop (3D Printing, Lasercut, CNC), textile lab (sewing machines, digital embroidery, tufting equipment), metalworking shop, woodworking tools, photo and video editing suite, music/media studio, book arts facilities, and exhibition/performance spaces.

- May apply individually or as a team (each member must apply and be accepted individually)
- Spouses/partners allowed for full stay (non-collaborators); children allowed for full stay

Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated by an advisory committee based on: artistic quality, relevance of the project, and motivation of the candidate. The program values multidisciplinary work and supports emerging artists seeking international visibility and curriculum development. Portfolio scrutiny is proportionate to the artist's experience.
