KAIR 2026 Open Call

Overview

A 69-day artist residency program in Kamiyama, Tokushima, Japan, offering studios, accommodations, travel support, material allowance, and stipend. Artists will exhibit work, participate in open studios, lead school workshops, and engage with the local community.

Eligibility

• Must be involved with painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, land art and other art making (not production art)
• Must be capable of working independently and managing daily life
• Must be able to produce at least one artwork during the residency and present it
• Must understand the purpose of the residency and be present for over 4/5 of the program period
• Must be able to lead community life with other artists and communicate with local people
• Must speak and understand English in daily conversation
• Must be in good health
• Minimum 40-day stay prior to exhibition required (shorter stays may be accepted with proportional reduction in living allowance)
• Must acknowledge KAIR's limited resources and constraints

Financial support

• Travel expenses: Round-trip economy airfare (overseas residents up to 200,000 JPY; domestic residents up to 75,000 JPY)
• Material allowance: 250,000 JPY
• Stipend: 200,000 JPY
• Apartment/studio provided
• Bike/car provided

Selection process

The selection committee will strictly screen all applicants. Results will be announced on the website by May 15, 2026. The committee will not provide individual feedback, comments, or reasons regarding submissions.
