About
Overview
The City Art Collection, managed by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) Public Art Division, acquires artwork through donations, gifts, purchases, and long-term loans. The collection contains more than 1,600 artworks including paintings, prints, sculpture, furniture, limited edition prints, and photographs that reflect the diversity of Los Angeles culture.
Collection Goals
The City Art Collection aims to enhance the climate for artistic creativity, promote understanding and awareness of the visual arts, and heighten the artistic heritage of the City of Los Angeles.
Programs
- Interdepartmental Loan Program: city agencies borrow artwork for their work environments
- External Loan Program: DCA loans artwork to agencies outside the City of Los Angeles and to non-profit organizations and cultural institutions with proper exhibition facilities and fine arts insurance
- Acquisitions and permanent sitings: artwork placed in parks, libraries, and municipal buildings
Criteria for Donations
The Department of Cultural Affairs seeks artwork that achieves artistic excellence, diversity and pluralism in relationship to the inventory, and avoids objects made in large editions or mass-produced. Artwork should address interests inherent in Los Angeles culture and represent the City in interesting and expanded ways. The collection especially supports artists residing in Los Angeles.
How to Donate
To donate artwork to the City Art Collection, complete an application and send it electronically or via mail to the Department of Cultural Affairs c/o the City Art Collection. Once received, a staff member will contact you with further steps. When complete, the application must receive final and conceptual approval from the Public Art Committee and Cultural Affairs Commission for formal acceptance into the collection.
How to Borrow
City employees and agencies may borrow artwork for their work areas. Non-profit organizations and outside arts and cultural institutions with proper exhibition facilities and fine arts insurance may also borrow. Contact the Department of Cultural Affairs at (213) 202-5555.
