Casa na Ilha is a self-directed art residency retreat on Ilhabela Island, the largest island in an archipelago off the north coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Located 200 km from São Paulo city and covered by Atlantic rainforest with 73 beaches and 27 waterfalls, the island is an ecological preserve with 84% protected land. Artists work independently with a 24/7 on-site tutor available for guidance, discussion, and project support. Groups of 2–6 artists from different disciplines work simultaneously, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and peer learning through common spaces and discussion groups.

  • Shared room with ocean view and terrace, ensuite shared bathroom (80 m²/860 sqf)
  • Private room with ocean view and ensuite private bathroom
  • Individual desks in rooms; main shared studio with ocean view; other indoor and outdoor work spaces
  • Daily small breakfast (coffee, tea, milk, fruits, bread)
  • Weekly group dinner (vegetarian, home-made)
  • Equipped kitchen (refrigerator, stove, blender, pots, etc.)
  • Weekly cleaning, linen, and towel changes (personal laundry not included)

  • Partners not participating in the program: 50% of private room fee

This is a self-directed residency with no set program or itinerary. Artists have uninterrupted, self-directed work time with no pressure to deliver finished work—focus can be on research and development. A 24/7 on-site tutor provides case-by-case guidance, helps discuss ideas and project progress, and assists with contacting organizations and arranging project partnerships as needed. Sessions and support are tailored to each artist's self-directed practice and pace.
