Overview

Landmarks Capital supports bricks-and-mortar projects that rehabilitate historic buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes in King County. Projects serving marginalized communities and addressing underrepresented histories receive additional consideration. Grants are capped at $100,000.

Eligibility

Individual owners or organizations serving as stewards of designated historic landmark properties in King County may apply. First-time applicants are encouraged to contact Program Manager Dana Phelan at (206) 263-1604 to discuss their project.

Funding Criteria

Projects are evaluated on: Quality (long-term sustainable plan following Secretary of Interior Standards); Feasibility (ready to begin within one year, prepared team, realistic budget, reimbursement-basis completion); Public Benefit (visibility, accessibility, economic impact, programming, or long-term preservation); and Advancing Equity (contributing to diversity of property types, serving marginalized communities, addressing underrepresented histories).

Equity Investment Funding

Additional funding is available for projects in Equity Investment areas or centered on marginalized communities, especially BIPOC communities disproportionately impacted by structural racism. Eligible projects must meet one or more: landmark outside City of Seattle; landmark in Seattle zip codes with significant social inequities per King County Communities of Opportunity index; or peer reviewer determination of merit on Advancing Equity criterion.

Public Benefit

Projects must serve the public interest by contributing to long-term viability of the landmark, ensuring community visibility or accessibility, promoting economic activity, or contributing to diversity of property types and histories in King County's built environment.
