Our Missions The Promotion and Distribution of French Cinema Internationally The Institut français promotes the non-commercial distribution of French cinema through its IFcinéma distribution platform.IFcinéma offers a catalog of French films and a catalog of films from the Cinémathèque Afrique for the organization of non-commercial public screenings internationally. This programming and distribution support is aimed at the network of French cultural institutions abroad (cultural services of French embassies and consulates, French Institutes, Alliances Françaises), its partners (festivals, media libraries, movie theaters, film clubs, etc.), and educators. Digitized theaters within the cultural network, meanwhile, receive enhanced support.Beyond this selection of films, the Institut français promotes areas of French excellence such as animated films, documentaries, TV series, and short films, through strong partnerships centered around the Animation Film Festival, the Short Film Festival, Documentary Film Month, Séries Mania, the Premiers Plans d’Angers Festival, etc. International Support for Creators in the French Creative Industries The Institut français shares its expertise with the cultural network and provides financial support through the PICC (Program for Cultural and Creative Industries): Each year, funding is provided for approximately 30 positions to implement programs that help structure the cultural and creative industries in the film and audiovisual sector, including co-production meetings, creative workshops (documentaries, animation), and professional exchanges at key industry markets. Support for Creative Projects and International Co-productions Through La Fabrique Cinéma La Fabrique Cinéma is a program designed to promote the emergence of young filmmakers from the Global South and emerging countries on the international market, created by the Institut français in partnership with France Médias Monde and the International Organization of La Francophonie.Developed in close collaboration with the Cannes Film Festival and its Film Market, La Fabrique Cinéma selects ten projects for first or second feature films each year to present them and introduce them in a privileged setting to the industry and its decision-makers during the Cannes Film Festival. Through La Fabrique Cinéma, the Institut français positions itself as a discoverer of international talent and promotes pluralism of thought and artistic expression.La Fabrique Cinéma takes place at the Institut français space, located on the Critics’ Week beach. It serves as a platform for French and international professionals to connect during the Cannes Film Market, featuring a program of roundtables, masterclasses, workshops, and professional networking events. In line with this, the Institut français also participates in the management of the “Aide aux cinémas du monde” co-production support fund, alongside the CNC. Preserving Africa's Cultural Heritage Through the Cinémathèque Afrique Since 1961, the Cinémathèque Afrique has housed one of the world’s largest collections of African films, with more than 1,700 works spanning all genres and hailing from 45 countries. This collection, rich in cultural, historical, and political significance, continues to expand with the acquisition of contemporary works. The Institut français oversees its non-commercial distribution worldwide, notably through the IFcinéma platform and partnerships with film festivals, universities, and film schools. As part of an effort to revitalize the institution, the FEF Création 2 project—an exceptional grant from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs—is supporting an ambitious modernization plan for the Cinémathèque Afrique: the restoration of some thirty films, the digitization of 600 titles, multilingual subtitling, digital accessibility, and the promotion of African cultural heritage. The FEF has made it possible to launch several major initiatives: a podcast in collaboration with RFI titled “ Cinéastes d’Afriques”, a “Cinémathèque Afrique” collection offering about fifteen films for free on the TV5monde+ platform, the publication of the critical study “Réparer le visible: histoire et devenir de la Cinémathèque Afrique,” etc. The program “Archives Vivantes”, meanwhile, invites five international artists to reinterpret these films through original creations, thereby establishing a dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary art.
