About
Residency Overview
Cecilia Hendrikx is an artist in residence for Semester 2, 2025–2026 as part of Year Group 2025/26. The residency is affiliated with visual art, anthropology, and architecture.
Project
Project title: As It Appears. Cecilia Hendrikx's research explores the relationship between architecture and the institutions it houses through the creation of a series of surtout de tables. She examines how architectural design both reflects and shapes the social, historical, and organisational dynamics within an institution. By engaging with the community of fellows, staff, and facilitators, she seeks to uncover how the built environment influences institutional roles. Her focus centres on spaces and their immediate surroundings, where appearances often veil more complex meanings. She investigates how moral values of the era in which spaces were constructed are reflected visually and how shifting contemporary perceptions alter our understanding of these environments. Her methodology integrates practical, theoretical, and phenomenological research.
Past Projects
- SHIFT, 2022–2024: Residency at House van Gelderen. Staged a performance and series of three-dimensional installations exploring how documentation leads to icon formation and how functional objects gain heritage status.
- THEFT, 2022–2023: Residency at Reinwardt Academy. Explored the link between ownership and understanding, using theft as a lens to interrogate heritage systems and the assignment of historical value.
