The ars LITURGICA initiative has been announcing artistic design competitions since 2010 focused on tasks in the sacred realm. Previous competitions resulted in an evangelary, a Lenten cloth, a processional cross, and a Christmas nativity scene. The 2026 competition concerns the Church of St. Dionysius in Nordwalde near Münster/Westphalia.

Many churches in their artistic design tell only of a small—primarily male—group of faith witnesses and bearers. This one-sidedness is to be countered decisively in St. Dionysius, Nordwalde, directly in the entrance area of the church with a "new key position." The biblical figure of Mary Magdalene played a central role in the church community's preliminary considerations.
