Medici Residency Occitanie - Villa Medici

Overview

Created in 2018 by the Occitanie Region in partnership with the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, the Prize Occitanie – Medici supports young contemporary creation and aims to develop the international influence of talent from Occitanie. The winner is selected through application and jury interview from around a hundred annual candidates.

The Residency

• Three-month residency at Villa Medici from October to December 2026
• Free accommodation including studio and living quarters
• €10,500 grant awarded by the Occitanie Region (conditional on completing the residency)
• Possible exhibition opportunity in a Regional exhibition venue (MRAC Sérignan or CRAC Sète) and/or publication in the year following the residency

Eligibility

• Professional artist in plastic and visual arts
• Artist-author status (URSSAF membership) or higher education diploma in plastic or visual arts
• Reside in Occitanie or have connection to the region (birthplace, diploma-level training)
• Applications from artists with international dimensions given priority

Application Requirements

• Completed application form
• URSSAF certificate (artist-author scheme) or copy of higher education diploma
• Artist portfolio including career presentation, artistic approach, work visuals, and CV
• Description of residency project including objectives, expected outcomes, planned follow-up, and motivations relating to Villa Medici
• Any other supporting documents

Selection Process

Applications submitted online at laregion.fr in the calls for projects section. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a joint jury of Region representatives, Villa Medici staff, and contemporary art experts. The selected application is then submitted for a vote by the deliberative body of the Occitanie Region.
