KORA – Centro del contemporaneo, Castrignano de' Greci, Province of Lecce, Italy

RAMDOM APS and Fondazione Elpis, within the project Il Borgo del Contemporaneo of the Municipality of Castrignano de' Greci co-financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU Measure 2.1 of PNRR "Attractiveness of Villages", invite artists, curators and researchers from diverse disciplines to participate in an 8-day masterclass aimed at sharing ideas, projects and experiences to conceive and develop horizons and opportunities of cultural production in marginal and decentralized areas. The masterclass will take place at KORA – Centro del contemporaneo, Castrignano de' Greci, a small municipality in the province of Lecce, and proposes to accompany participants in defining their own original works and initiatives, through dialogue with artists, curators and intellectuals who have been engaged on these issues for years.

The masterclass addresses the theme of cultural production in areas marginal to the main centers of essential services (education, health and mobility) of the national territory. These places were, for the first time, the object of programmatic and institutional attention on the occasion of the ministerial dossier National Strategy for Internal Areas of 2013. In the ten years that have now separated us from the publication of the dossier, critical-artistic debate on public space has expanded considerably, overcoming the limits of the urban horizon and venturing into the interstices, harbingers of both opportunities and difficulties, of the inhabited landscape. In this framework, still in the process of definition, a disparate plurality of projects, practices and methodologies have emerged aimed at transforming the fragilities of spaces often invested by phenomena of depopulation and isolation into occasions for political, ecological and social rethinking. The extraordinary polycentrism of Italy's countryside and small municipalities, potential energy of our country unequaled at the European level, has thus returned to the center of public and private strategic visions. In this complex panorama, internal areas still host about a quarter of the Italian population and can designate both mountainous and cartographically central areas as well as steep coastal settlements, at the extreme margins of the national territory.
