Medialab Matadero opens the call for its fifth annual Situated Research Residency program 2027. The program selects three research and creation projects exploring relationships between contemporary art, design, science, technology, and society, with a critical, experimental approach open to collaboration. Proposals must sit at the margins or intersections of disciplines, methodologies, and knowledges.

Projects must connect explicitly with one or more of the following: LAB 1 Sentient Media, LAB 2 The Metabolic Sublime, LAB 3 Synthetic Minds, LAB 4 Weird Futures, and LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth.

The residency runs from January to July 2027 in person in Madrid. Long stays are recommended between March and June. Includes access to Medialab's material infrastructure — Fablab, technical materials, and individual workspace — plus a stipend of €10,000 (before tax).

A finished project is not required as an outcome. The program prioritizes production of public knowledge, which may take the form of manuals, documentaries, essays, or audiovisual records of collective learning. Selected projects must schedule public activities — seminars, workshops, conversations — with logistical and conceptual support from the Medialab team.

The call is open to individuals or collectives researching in design, art, architecture, urbanism, economics, film, photography, journalism, digital media, environmental science, philosophy, engineering, social studies, political science, programming, materials science, activism, or any other field consistent with the stated goals.

The application deadline is September 27, 2026. Applications may be submitted in Spanish or English.
