Undergraduate Individual Study Abroad

Overview

Burren College of Art offers a transformative study abroad experience for undergraduate students. The college maintains a maximum capacity of 40 students during the academic year, including Study Abroad undergraduates, postgraduate students, and artists-in-residence from around the world. This intimate community fosters discussion, artistic collaboration, and cross-disciplinary exchanges. Students are assigned a large studio space with 24/7 access for the duration of their programme.

Academic Structure

Students normally take 5 courses during the semester, each carrying 3 credits. Courses are delivered in-studio on a tutorial basis or as group courses. Tutorial courses are taught through scheduled 1-to-1 contact in a student's own studio, supplemented by regular group presentations, discussions and critiques. Group courses are taught as a unified class with individual advising sessions.

Course Offerings

A diverse array of courses is available in Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, Photography, and adjunct courses such as Art & Ecology, Art of Daily Living, Walking as Art Practice, and Art in Context. Non-studio courses in Art History, Creative Writing and Irish Studies are also offered. Courses are available at Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced and Independent levels.

Artistic Exposure

A weekly visiting artist programme, regular trips to galleries in Dublin, London and Berlin, and visits to local galleries and visual art festivals in the West of Ireland expose students to the best of European contemporary art.
