The Art Of The Icon is an 8-day residency and workshop in Athens for visual artists, jewelers, crafters, designers, filmmakers, performers, art theorists, curators, and academics exploring Byzantine art and the icon tradition. The program combines online introduction, guided visits to UNESCO sites and museums, and support for developing creative video, narrative, comics, or presentation projects inspired by the residency.

Artists working in jewelry, object design, sculpture, installation, performance, video, photography, textile art, ceramics, as well as filmmakers, crafters, art theorists, researchers, and curators are encouraged to apply.

  • Online introductory course in Byzantine art history and its significance for contemporary art
  • 8 days / 7 nights accommodation (single room) in central Athens
  • Workshops on video narrative, storytelling, and new formats of presentation
  • Guided city tours and visits to Elefsina (ancient and Byzantine monuments), Byzantine Museum, and National Archaeological Museum of Athens
  • Athens city tour focusing on Byzantine treasures and monuments
  • Video screening at Munich SCHMUCK Jewelry Week 2027

890.00 EUR paid by the artist in two or three installments. Fee includes accommodation only; does not include travel fares, museum and archaeological site entry tickets, meals, artist materials, or tools.
