About

Overview

Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) offers two artist-in-residence programs for international creators working in visual art, film, design, and architecture. Creators stay, engage in creation, and conduct research in Tokyo. Results are presented at the Open Studio and/or Result Presentation at TOKAS Hongo.

Residency Programs & Duration

Individual Projects: 4 positions, 3 months. Sept–Nov 2025 OR Jan–Mar 2026
Theme Projects: 2 positions, 3 months. May–July 2025. Theme: "Technology and the future of humanity." Two international creators work alongside two local creators, exchanging ideas on cultural differences while developing independent projects.

Theme: Technology and the Future of Humanity

The call explores contemporary concerns about AI, technological singularity, IT acceleration, labor displacement, and the 'Promethean shame' of benefiting from yet fearing technological excess. Applicants are invited to rethink how we exist, connect with each other, and interact in a technology-encompassed world.

Location & Facilities

TOKAS Residency is located in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, an area with old town culture and local industries. Nearby attractions include Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Hall), Sumida Hokusai Museum, Edo-Tokyo Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Tokyo Skytree.

Support Provided

Living space (single room)
Roundtrip economy airfare between nearest home airport and Tokyo (Narita or Haneda)
Living expenses: JPY 3,500 per diem per day (consumption tax excluded)
Fee for creative work/project
Shared studio (two studios: 125㎡ and 48㎡, open 9:30am–10:00pm, equipped with Wi-Fi and air conditioning)

Expectations & Presentation

Selected artists are expected to present work at the Open Studio and Result Exhibition planned for TOKAS Hongo in 2026.
