Fellowship Opportunity: Technical Theater Fellowship

Overview

Theater Mu, the largest Asian American theater company in the Midwest, seeks an emerging or early-career stage manager or technician based in Minnesota for a hands-on fellowship during the world premiere of Kung Fu Zombies vs Southeast Asian Girl Scouts, written by Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay and directed by Fran de Leon. The fellow will work alongside Production Manager Jessica Goldade Swanson and the production team, gaining exposure to all phases of production while building cultural awareness of Southeast Asian American stories and accessible design practices.

Eligibility

Emerging or early-career stage manager or technician based in Minnesota, 18 or older. Must have knowledge of the tech process, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, experience working with diverse individuals and teams, reliability for flexible hours including evenings and weekends, access to transportation, and commitment to Theater Mu's mission of social justice and Asian American stories.

Desired Qualifications

• 1+ years of academic, professional, or internship experience in stage management, OR
• 1+ years of academic, professional, or volunteer experience as a theater artist in any area

Stipend & Benefits

$800 stipend. Additional benefits include complimentary tickets to the production, mentorship meetings, and alumni network access.

Fellowship Responsibilities

• Pre-Production (September): Attend production meetings and support production and stage management prepping for rehearsals
• Rehearsals (beginning Sept 22): Attend 2-3 rehearsals to observe director, stage management, designers, and actors; learn story structure, style, and pace
• Building Slideshow (October): Build slideshow for open captions focusing on accessibility and text beats
• Tech and Previews (Oct 21-30): Assist production manager and stage management; learn open captioning process; rehearse for dress run
• Run Open Captions (Nov 7 & 14): Operate open captions for two performances; arrive at 6 pm to set up projector and computer

About the Production

Kung Fu Zombies vs Southeast Asian Girl Scouts is the world premiere finale of playwright Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay's Kung Fu Zombies trilogy. The story follows three Southeast Asian Girl Scouts keeping their Saint Paul, MN community together during a zombie apocalypse while helping elders, doing food runs, and earning Gold Awards.
