Get matched →Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably experienced contemporary public artists to develop and install works for the interior area of the forthcoming Croydon Cultural Hub. This new precinct will include integrated indoor and outdoor spaces providing activation, inspiration and empowerment. The Cultural Hub is a contemporary mixed-use facility housing a 180-seat black box theatre and box office bar, café, Council customer services, health and wellbeing co-working hub, bookable meeting spaces, and Your Library Croydon.
The hub will be built on the corner of Mt Dandenong Road and Civic Square, serving as a central gathering place with state-of-the-art library, black box theatre and events space, multipurpose rooms, meeting spaces, Council Service Centre, and café. It will retain the heritage frontage of EV's Youth Centre while featuring modern, sustainable, inclusive spaces across two levels with ample natural light and engaging architectural features.
A total of $220,000 (including GST) is available for this public art commission.
The public artwork will be contemporary in design, complement the building architecture, and bring interest to internal areas. The artwork will be situated on ground level and be safe for public interaction, without reducing access or movement through space. Artists are encouraged to consider the work's presence at night and day, and the possibility of lighting. Roofline, elevated or suspended works must comply with building weight bearing capacities; heavy load bearing works are discouraged.
Work must meet structural integrity, safety, durability and maintenance requirements and comply with applicable regulations. Artwork must be place-based and site responsive, reflect shared community values and identity, support accessibility and diverse representation, engage meaningfully with First Peoples, consider environmental impacts, and apply leading methodologies and contemporary industry standards.
