Open call for 2026 term II of Japanese Artists Abroad – Support Program for International Biennales

Overview

The National Center for Art Research, Japan (NCAR) supports organizers of recurring international art exhibitions held outside Japan to facilitate Japanese artist participation and enhance the international visibility of Japanese contemporary art.

Key dates

• Application period: June 15–July 31, 2026, 11:59pm JST
• Results notification: September 30, 2026
• Exhibition period: October 1, 2026–September 30, 2027

Eligibility

• Organizers of recurring international art exhibitions (biennales, triennales) held outside Japan
• Japanese artists must participate in the exhibition
• Organizations must have independent secretariat system and accounting organization
• Must agree to adhere to program guidelines
• Exhibition must demonstrate originality in theme, artist selection, and curatorial approach
• Stable history of institutional activity or reliable administrative structure for recently established exhibitions

Support funding

• Maximum support per artist: 3.5 million Japanese yen
• Maximum support per exhibition (if multiple Japanese artists participate): 7 million Japanese yen
