Lamérisflat, Utrecht, Netherlands

This is a documentation of a completed public art commission by Vincent de Boer for the City Canvas project in Utrecht. De Boer created a 12 by 40 meter mural on the Lamérisflat, the highest artwork in Utrecht. The mural is an official art commission from the Municipality of Utrecht and has been added to the public art collection.

Vincent de Boer (born 1988) is internationally known for painting rooted in typography and calligraphy. He has developed his own painting technique and recently works extensively with a custom drawing machine that creates abstract patterns using horizontal brush strokes on long strips of paper. The imagery is abstract but viewers often perceive pixelated plants, tree roots, and insects.

De Boer's mural on the Lamérisflat responds to the rigid design of public space. He hopes the abstract pattern activates the imagination of passersby: 'Everything in the city is rectilinear and efficiently organized. Our society seems to think like a machine: press this button, get that result. In my view, our public spaces lack room for imagination, stories, attention, organic forms and nuance.'
