Overview
For over one hundred thirty years, the American Academy in Rome has awarded the Rome Prize to support innovative and cross-disciplinary work in the arts and humanities. Each year, the Rome Prize is given to about thirty artists and scholars who represent the highest standard of excellence.

Eligibility
- US citizens required for most Rome Prize categories
- US citizens and foreign nationals with 3+ years US residency may apply for Environmental Arts & Humanities or postdoctoral fellowships in Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Early Modern Studies, and Modern Italian Studies
- Graduate students in humanities may apply for predoctoral fellowships only if ABD
- Undergraduate students are not eligible
- Previous Rome Prize winners may not reapply
- Winners must disclose all fellowships and awards expected during residency
- Winners may not hold full-time jobs but may undertake part-time work
Application Requirements
All materials must be submitted in English, including letters of recommendation. Applicants may submit applications to multiple categories for an additional fee, requiring a separate online application for each. Applicants may not submit more than one application in any one category. Please thoroughly read the application guidelines for your discipline as eligibility and submission requirements differ.
Collaborations
Collaborators working in the same discipline may submit a joint application provided their work is genuinely collaborative. Each individual must meet all eligibility requirements. Joint applications must be submitted in one dossier with one collaborator serving as primary applicant. Joint winners each receive a full stipend, individual living space, and meals; they share a workspace.
Environmental Arts & Humanities Rome Prize
A Rome Prize designed specifically for collaborative efforts in Environmental Arts & Humanities. Applications are encouraged from artists and scholars working jointly on projects that help expand understanding of the way human beings relate to, experience, or process encounters with the natural world. Collaborative pairs may include artists of any sort (visual, digital, architectural, musical, literary, textile, performance) and scholars in any field.
Application Timeline
The deadline for the 2026 Rome Prize application has passed. The application portal for the 2027 Rome Prize competition will open in August 2026. Information sessions are being held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 and Monday, October 27, 2025, from 5:00pm to 6:00pm EDT (free, registration required).

- Eligibility
- US citizens required for most categories; foreign nationals may apply for Environmental Arts & Humanities or postdoctoral fellowships if they have lived in the United States for three years immediately preceding the deadline. Graduate students must be ABD. Undergraduate students and previous Rome Prize winners are ineligible. Winners may not hold full-time jobs during fellowship but may undertake part-time work.
