Overview
Artist Project grants from the Mondriaan Fund support visual artists in executing a specific artistic plan within a defined working period. This can include new work creation, collaborations, travel, research, mentoring, or residency stays in the Netherlands or abroad.
Eligibility
- Visual artists professionally active for at least 1 year
- Professional practice date determined by Bachelor's degree completion (if applicable) or first presentation of work in professional art circles
- Not enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's, or postdoctoral programmes (except part-time programmes under 20 hours/week)
- Artistically and substantively active in the visual arts field in the Netherlands and/or Caribbean part of the Kingdom
Award & Funding
- Fixed contribution: €2,785 per month for up to 6 months
- Flexible contribution: Amount depends on plan, duration, and budget for up to 12 months
- Applicants must contribute at least 10% of total requested amount (Mondriaan Fund covers maximum 90%)
Eligible Costs
- Materials specifically related to the project
- Rental or purchase (depreciation costs) of equipment and materials
- Travel expenses for return flights, train journeys, or mileage to and from main location
- Hiring third parties including travel and accommodation expenses
- Residency expenses (note: time investment contribution is halved if residency covers accommodation and meals)
- Artist's book publication (if autonomous work in an edition)
Application & Timeline
Applications can be submitted at any time throughout the year using the online application system. A 3-month processing period is required, though processing may take longer due to high application volume. Grants are not awarded retrospectively.
Terms & Conditions
An account is required to submit applications. Cultural institutions must subscribe to the Fair Practice Code and implement the Guideline for Artists' Fees. If another party contributes (art venue, museum, gallery, company, or client), their financial contribution must be in acceptable proportion to the Mondriaan Fund's contribution.
