Artists will learn or deepen knowledge in embroidery, weaving and dyeing as well as understand the local textile crafts of Arraiolos, a town where wool rugs have been hand embroidered since the Middle Ages. The program provides space and time to focus on work, make new connections, learn new skills, and discover the Alentejo Region with a multidisciplinary group of artists.
Artist accommodation and studios are located in an 18th-century manor house in the city center. The residency area includes 9 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a kitchen, living and dining room, meeting and screening room, studios and workspaces, a terrace, garden, and courtyard. Artists traveling alone are accommodated in private rooms with either private or shared bathrooms, depending on availability.
Each artist is assigned a workspace equipped with a table, chair, lamp, shelves, and wall panels. The residency offers access to a printmaking studio, a photography studio with EPSON SureColor 6000 printer, a Yamaha Clavinova piano, video projectors and speakers, looms, a Singer Heavy Duty 4411 sewing machine, and fiber processing equipment.
The general residency program includes regular project follow-up, portfolio presentations, networking and support with local and regional resources, excursions to the region's natural, historical, and industrial heritage sites, and lectures by resident artists at the local School of Arts of the University.
