About
Overview
Zea Mays Printmaking is offering a subsidized 2-week residency fellowship to one practicing printmaker or a pair of collaborative printmakers. Applicants are strongly encouraged to demonstrate commitment to the organization's mission to research, practice and share safer and non-toxic printmaking processes.
Residency Details
The residency includes on-site housing in a 2nd floor apartment with two private bedrooms, full kitchen, bathroom, sitting room and WiFi. The building is fully heated and air-conditioned. Each bedroom has an XL full-sized bed, work table, chair, lamp, shelves and hooks. The shared kitchen is fully equipped with gas stove, microwave, full-size refrigerator, and all necessary dishes, cookware and appliances.
Studio Access & Equipment
Fellows receive a private studio (the Annex) within the Zea Mays facility with 24/7 access, equipped with a 39.5" x 72" Takach etching press, large work tables and sink. Use of Zea Mays' etching, photopolymer and screenprint facilities is available during open studio hours (Tuesday-Sunday, 10 AM-6 PM). Additional equipment such as vertical etching tanks, hotplates, large rollers and screen printing press can be brought in as needed.
Support & Instruction
Fellowship winners receive 4 hours of one-on-one private instruction with Studio Director Liz Chalfin. Additional private lessons can be scheduled for $75/hour. Materials costs are not included in the fellowship.
Eligibility
Open to practicing printmakers with experience in etching, photopolymer, screen printing, monotype, relief, letterpress, paper or polyester plate lithography or combinations of these media. Artists must demonstrate vision for a project to begin or continue at Zea Mays Printmaking.
Requirements & Restrictions
Artists in residence may not bring VOC solvents to Zea Mays; other chemistry must be approved in advance. Residency time is flexible—artists can work privately with studio door closed or engage with the community through shared studio time, lunch, tea, or open studio events.
Application
Applications are submitted online and reviewed by a committee of Zea Mays faculty and staff. Applicants provide up to 10 work examples, with each image file under 1 MB. Collaborative applications should include images of previous collaborations or work by each artist.
