About
Residency Overview
Dariya Temirkhan, a Kazakhstani artist working in digital and physical collages, sound art, and video art, is participating in the Artists-in-Residence Programme at MuseumsQuartier Vienna. Her practice focuses on water as a central theme from the perspective of a Kazakhstani citizen, exploring how access to water, its absence, and its political and ecological significance shape personal experience, collective memory, and the relationship between humans and their environment.
Residency Period
- July–August 2026
Location
MuseumsQuartier Wien, Vienna, Austria
Project Focus
During the residency, Temirkhan plans to deepen her research into the history of the Kerderi tribe and its relationship with water. She will collect historical records and trace a timeline of the tribe's migrations from one body of water to another—from the Fergana Valley and Syr Darya River to the Aral Sea region and ultimately the Zhaiyk, where the artist and her family were raised. During the residency, she intends to expand this research through exploring museum collections and visual representations of regional water histories.
Artist Background
In 2023, Temirkhan held a solo exhibition, "Tynys Bitti," exploring feelings of anxiety and uncertainty following the January Events in Kazakhstan. In 2025, she participated in the opening program of Tselinny Center, "Barsakelmes," where her video work "Who Guards Your Dreams?" was projected onto a mural.
