Medici Residency Daniel Arasse - Villa Medici

Overview

The Medici Residency Daniel Arasse, awarded jointly by the École française de Rome and the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, offers eight scholarships annually for French-speaking doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in art history and theory. Researchers conduct 1-2 months of focused work in Rome on topics spanning the Renaissance to contemporary periods, with no nationality requirement.

Key dates

• Notification of results: by end of April at the latest
• Residency periods: October–November 2026 (4 months) or January 8–March 10, 2027 (4 months)
• Consecutive 1- or 2-month stays within these windows

Award

• 1,000 euros per month (8 months total = 8,000 euros)
• Free shared housing in Rome with other Arasse awardees

Eligibility

Candidates must be French-speaking doctoral or postdoctoral students (first postdoctoral award only) in the history and theory of art. No nationality requirement. Research must focus on art from the Renaissance to the present and require presence in Roman institutions or those in Italy.

Application requirements

• Letter of application (letter of motivation) addressed to the Director of the École française de Rome and Director of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici
• Curriculum vitae (Master's/PhD or postdoctoral studies details)
• Detailed work program in four points (maximum 4 pages, in French): general research presentation (20–30 lines max); particular subject requiring Rome presence for 1–2 months (15–20 lines); proposed method for the subject (1 page max); research institutions for documentation, archives, and bibliography (1–2 pages max)
• Letter of introduction from research supervisor

Selection and notification

A committee comprising the Directors of the École française de Rome and French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici and the heads of Modern/Contemporary Studies and Art History departments meets once yearly in spring. Candidates are notified of results by end of April at the latest.

Post-residency

Successful candidates must submit an activity report within two months of residency end to the Director of Studies for Modern and Contemporary Periods at the École française de Rome and the art history officer at the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici.
