Idylwood Park Asphalt Art Design Call – City of Redmond / Calls & Submissions

OPPORTUNITY
The City of Redmond is seeking an artist or artist team to create unified designs for three crosswalks adjacent to Idylwood Park in Redmond, WA. These designs will be fabricated out of Thermoplast and installed by the City of Redmond’s Public Works team. This is a creative opportunity to utilize art to reflect the local community while improving visibility and road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

LOCATION AND SITE OVERVIEW
Three crosswalks are located at the intersection of West Lake Sammamish Pkwy NE and NE 36th St, in the Idylwood neighborhood, adjacent to Idylwood Park in Redmond, Washington.

ELIGIBILITY
This call is open to individual artists or artists groups residing in the United States. Because the artist is expected to understand the local park and neighborhood, the artist selection panel will consider the proximity of the artist’s studio to the project site.

BUDGET
The selected artist or artist team will receive $3,000 total for designs for three crosswalks.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process shall occur in two phases:

In the first phase, an Artist Review Panel comprised of arts professionals, Redmond Arts & Culture Commissioners, and community members will select up to three (3) candidates based on qualifications and past examples of work.

In the second phase, the short-listed candidates will be given crosswalk dimensions and design specifications. They will then have 4 weeks and be paid a $500 stipend to develop a draft concept to be shared during a proposal presentation for finalists held during the week of December 14, 2026. Artists will be evaluated based on presentation materials, professional references and answers provided to interview questions posed by the selection panel. Artist presentations will be generated by each artist in any presentation format they wish and will occur in-person at Redmond City Hall. The finalist selected will then move onto the Redmond Arts & Culture Commission for approval. Upon selection of a finalist, a professional services contract will be executed.

Applicants will be notified of the panel’s initial decision by email no later than November 9, 2026. Finalists will be notified of the panel and Arts & Culture Commissions final decision by email no later than January 18, 2027.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Shortlist Selection Criteria – Finalists will be selected through a panel process that will evaluate the applications based on the criteria below:
* Strength of Statement of Interest and Understanding of the Project
* Quality and strength of past artwork
* Demonstrated ability to produce a final design

Finalist Selection Criteria – The Artist Selection Committee may select a finalist during the proposal presentations based on the following criteria:
* Original vision, creativity, and sophisticated conceptual skills
* Compliance with guidelines and submission requirements based on dimensions shared with finalists
* Ability of the proposal to address the goals/theme of the overall project:
– INSPIRATION: How do you see the themes of this project and the character of this community coming alive through your design?
– DESIGN: How do the three designs interconnect together to create a unified project that reflects the specific location?
– CREATIVITY: How is this design unique to your creative process, while also fulfilling the criteria

Sunday, October 25, 2026: Applications due, 11:00 p.m. PST
Week of November 2, 2026: Selection panel
Week of November 9, 2026: Finalist selection announced
Week of December 7, 2026: Finalist proposal deadline
Week of December 14, 2026: Finalist Interviews
Monday, January 18, 2027: Selection announced
Monday, March 1, 2027: Artist delivers final design to staff
June – July, 2027: Installation by City staff
