What is Res Artis? Res Artis: Worldwide Network of Arts Residencies is the leading international Member-network of arts residencies. What does Res Artis do? Res Artis is the peak body for the global arts residency field. We support our Members by: – promoting their programmes – providing tools for professional development and capacity building We support the arts residencies field by: – advocating for the importance and future sustainability of arts residencies – providing recommendations towards cultural mobility research and policy Who can be a Member of Res Artis? Res Artis has over 550 vetted Members from all over the world. They come from a range of small and large institutions, programs and placements. Some of our Members work alone and some have large teams supporting them; some examples being arts residency operators, arts councils and creative institutions as well as artist collectives and curators. We offer three membership options and you can find more details here. Do I need to be a Res Artis Member to use the website? Artists – No. Our Members pay an annual membership subscription to list Open Calls and opportunities on our website so that artists can search them for free! You can search residency listings and Open Calls all over the world and you can contact Members directly if you have questions about their programs. Residency operators – Yes. If you would like to list Open Calls or opportunities through our website and be eligible for Res Artis benefits, you will need to become a Member. Your annual Res Artis Member fee will enable you to have a residency listing on the website and also give you the opportunity to list Open Calls and news items to promote your residency program. There is also an extensive Members Only section of resources to assist with your professional development. Arts Councils, funding bodies and other institutions – Yes. Your annual Res Artis Member fee will enable you to have an Associate Member profile and also a residency listing if you have a residency program. We are able to cross-promote your programs, initiatives and opportunities. Thinking of starting an arts residency? If you are a Creative who is interested in establishing an arts residency we would recommend initially becoming a Res Artis Individual Member. This will enable you to access our extensive Members Only section of resources to assist with your professional development and residency planning. Why does Res Artis charge Member fees? Res Artis is a not-for-profit organisation that relies almost entirely on membership fees received. These membership contributions go directly towards the operating expenses of Res Artis including payment of wages to our three part-time staff working to improve our reach, visibility and advocacy on behalf of our members, as well as our efforts to ensure long-term sustainability of the arts residency sector. What is an arts residency? You can find a detailed description here. Who can undertake an art residency? Whether you are an established or emerging Creative, you can find a variety of Open Calls on the Res Artis website. Each Open Call will specify the requirements of the residency program. Some programs will be directed to emerging practitioners, some to established, and some to both! Do I need to pay a fee to undertake a residency? Some residency programs will require you to pay a fee to undertake the program, some will be free and some will be able to provide funding. It depends on the Member and their funding situation. Please be aware that although some parts of the world may be able to access funding for creative endeavours from their government, some other regions do not. Please refer to additional Member profiles to understand if fees are required and contact Members directly for any fee-related questions. Should I sign an agreement before undertaking a residency program? Yes, you should sign a written agreement before undertaking a residency program. This is to protect all parties involved ie both the artist and the residency host. The agreement should outline dates, fees, requirements and conditions. Res Artis is not in a position to provide any legal advice to artists or Members. If you need assistance, please consult a legal representative in your area. I have an issue with a Res Artis Member, what should I do? Although residency exchanges are private contracts between the artist and host residency, Res Artis strives to maintain quality and transparency across our network and the broader field, and to ensure that our Members abide by our shared Values. We hope that any experiences you undertake through Res Artis Member programs are generative and wonderful! However, if you do encounter any problems, you can fill out a complaint form through the Res Artis website and we will investigate further. How do I see current opportunities available? Simply click on the ‘Explore’ and then ‘Open Calls’ tab at the top of the Res Artis website. To see further details on Res Artis Members, select the ‘Residency Profiles’ option. I am an artist in need of emergency assistance. What should I do? If your health or safety is in danger, please call the police/ local authorities/ hospital in your area immediately. What should I do? Every year Res Artis holds a global conference to discuss the opportunities, complexities and issues within the global arts residency sector.
