Inherited Scars began as the artist's personal effort to de-incarcerate after 21 years—to process the paperwork and trauma that followed him home from prison. C Fausto started pulping and remaking those documents into handmade paper as a way to heal. This restorative practice has grown into a somatic process he now shares. The artist will guide participants through the same paper-making process, transforming their own paperwork into new forms of expression and release.
C. Fausto Cabrera is a writer, visual artist, and restorative justice practitioner whose work examines incarceration, transformation, and the ethics of repair through language, material process, and lived experience. As a writer, his poetry and prose have appeared in Denver Quarterly, Colorado Review, Idaho Review, Water~Stone Review, and other literary journals. He is the co-author with photographer Alec Soth of Parameters of Our Cage. As a visual artist, he works across drawing, painting, photography, and handmade paper, often incorporating legal documents, institutional records, and other remnants of carceral life. His ongoing Inherited Scars collection transforms shredded legal paperwork into handmade paper that serves as the ground for portraiture and mark-making. Cabrera is a Fellow of the Common Justice Practitioners Lab and Director of Transformative Justice at Damascus Way Re-Entry and Recovery Center.
