Overview
Grant program for visual arts institutions to cover the costs of artist fees—compensation paid to artists for work on exhibitions. The Mondriaan Fund offers this support to encourage institutions to apply fair pay guidelines for artists.
Who is eligible?
Visual arts institutions that exhibit contemporary visual art and/or heritage without a sales purpose, established in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Institutions must apply fair pay, have the artist(s) sign an agreement, and subscribe to the Fair Practice Code, Culture Governance Code, and Diversity & Inclusion Code.
What the grant covers
The grant covers artist fees—compensation for work on an exhibition. This includes producing or adapting work, construction/maintenance/dismantling of exhibitions, event activities (lectures, workshops), and providing work for presentation. Does not cover material costs, production costs, transport, or travel.
Amount
The Mondriaan Fund determines the contribution per application. A grant is provided if the fee is at least 100% of the standard amount (per the Fair Pay Rate Table 2023). The maximum contribution is 50% of the standard amount (excluding VAT). Minimum application contribution: €100.
Artist requirements
The artist must have at least a bachelor's degree in visual arts or have worked as a professional visual artist for 3 years or more.
Application conditions
Applications are submitted through the Mondriaan Fund's online application system on a rolling basis until budget is exhausted. Processing period: 2 months from full submission. Applications must be submitted at least 2 months before the exhibition opens. The exhibition must open to the public within 12 months of application. Grants cannot be awarded retroactively. Artist invoices must be paid within 1 month of the invoice date.
Exclusions
Institutions receiving funds for fair pay for 2025-2028; institutions receiving multi-year support under Art Platform Programmes 2025-2028; institutions receiving multi-year support from other National Culture Funds; basic cultural infrastructure institutions (except regional museums); institutions supported under Heritage Act regulations; institutions awarded Art Heritage Festival grants; institutions otherwise receiving fair pay funds from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
