Searching & Choosing

Overview

This is a guide to searching and choosing among residency opportunities in the transartists.org database, which contains more than 1400 professional residency programs. The guide offers advice on narrowing your search, evaluating program fit, and considering practical factors.

How to search

• Don't be too specific by region: opportunities nearby may suit you even if they're not in your first choice location.
• Consider multidisciplinary residency programs when searching by discipline.
• Look for international opportunities nearby as well as far away.

Evaluate the residency model

• Determine whether you prefer solitude or socializing.
• Check the program's freedom and obligations for guest artists.
• Review what studio arrangement you need (living and working in same space vs. separate).

Check facilities

• Make a list of art facilities you need for your practice.
• Verify the offered facilities match your requirements.
• Check availability of tools, materials, and studio type you need.
• Research nearby art supply stores.

Consider program fit

Even if a program looks wonderful in photos or comes recommended, verify it matches your actual wishes and expectations. Check if comparable programs nearby might suit you equally well or better. If invited, ask why the program wants you and whether you would have chosen it yourself.

Practical considerations

• Can you bring your partner, children, or pets?
• Can you bring or cook your own food?
• What transportation is provided or needed?
• Do you need a driving license, and what's available (public transport, bike)?
• Does electricity voltage match your equipment?
• Do you need special medical care?
