About
Overview
The Michigan Society of Fellows, founded in 1970, is piloting a new Arts Initiative Fellowship for the 2027–2030 term alongside its six customary annual postdoctoral fellowships. The Arts Initiative fellow will participate in the Society's interdisciplinary intellectual life, teach the equivalent of one academic year across the three-year term, and pursue independent creative work, research, or artistic projects while in residence at the University of Michigan.

Eligibility
- MFA degree or comparable terminal degree in the arts, earned between June 1, 2024 and August 30, 2027 (firm dates; no exceptions)
- Terminal degree must be clearly based in creative practice
- Applicants with Ph.D. earned within the eligibility period may apply if clearly based in creative practice (with or without earlier MFA)
- International applicants welcomed; J-1 status normally pursued for sponsorship

Expectations & Obligations
- Participate in monthly colloquia and Society dinners
- Engage in conversation with other members about intellectual interests
- Participate in annual evaluation of fellowship applicants
- Serve as evaluators for ProQuest Distinguished Dissertations Awards
- Teach equivalent of one academic year (two full terms) during the three-year fellowship
- Submit written report on activities and accomplishments at end of each fellowship year
- Cite Society of Fellows affiliation in resulting publications and provide copies to the Society
Review & Notification
Applicants will receive a confirmation email once the application is submitted. All applicants will be notified in writing of their final application status by March 31 at the latest. The selection committee's evaluations remain confidential, and the committee is not able to provide feedback on individual applications.
