Hong Kong

A comprehensive guide to artist residencies in Hong Kong, covering the residency ecosystem, funding sources, geographic clusters, and how the scene works. The guide surveys 2,300+ residencies and live open calls to help artists find programs that fit their practice.

Hong Kong's residency scene is compact but intense. Space is limited, costs run high, and you get access to a dense network of galleries, institutions, fairs, and artist-run spaces. Most residencies fall into four broad categories: institution-led programs linked to arts centres or cultural bodies; artist-run and independent residencies emphasizing process and experimentation; nature and community-based residencies in rural or semi-rural New Territories areas; and commercial or hospitality-linked programs. Residencies are typically short-term, running 2–6 weeks or 1–3 months, with emphasis on research, experimentation, and exchange rather than finished work.

Hong Kong does not have one unified national arts funding system. Public and quasi-public support comes through the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), the Hong Kong Arts Centre, and the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (vA!). Private funding sources include family foundations, property developers, galleries, luxury brands, and philanthropists. Understanding who funds a residency helps clarify what public outcomes or community programs may be expected.

Hong Kong Island is home to major arts institutions, commercial galleries, and heritage sites. Key areas include Central/Admiralty/Hong Kong Park with heritage venues and public institutions; the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (vA!) offering specialist facilities for ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, and experimental media (eligibility typically for Hong Kong-based artists); Happy Valley with the Young Artist in Residence@V54 program at Po Leung Kuk Youth Community Arts Centre, hosting local and international artists aged 18–40; and the Southern District creative corridor with the Nock Art Foundation Artist Residency, which provides a fully equipped studio and one-bedroom apartment.

Kowloon tends to have more industrial buildings and more affordable rents than central Hong Kong Island. To Kwa Wan hosts the In-situ | Hong Kong Artist Residency, a multidisciplinary, process-focused program emphasizing experimentation, longer residencies of two to three months, private studios, communal woodshop access, and open studios. Artists cover their own accommodation, flights, daily living, and production costs. Other neighborhoods such as Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, and Kowloon City host smaller artist-run spaces and project rooms with residencies that may appear as ad-hoc invitations or project-based stays.

The New Territories offer mountains, farms, villages, and a different residency experience outside the main urban core. Tai Po/Lam Tsuen is home to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) Artist-in-Residence Programme, which invites artists, performers, and writers for residencies.
