About
Overview
The LUX Center for the Arts offers a year-long Artist in Residence program for artists with a desire to teach and share art-making while supporting the community. Residents receive private studio space, teaching opportunities, and opportunities to exhibit or curate shows in gallery spaces. The program is designed for artists interested in both developing their own practice and building community engagement.
Residency Term
The residency term is 1 year, beginning early August and lasting through the end of July. Residents are selected in the spring. Residents have the opportunity to discuss extending their residency for a second year.
What to Expect
Residents are expected to teach classes regularly (multi-week programs) and workshops (single events). LUX relies on residents to develop new curriculum and encourages them to create classes focused on topics of their choosing. Residents will connect with local galleries, art patrons, community groups, and fellow artists. They are encouraged to participate in hands-on art-making events, outreach opportunities, and public engagement.
Eligibility
Most residents have earned an MFA, but equivalent experience (residencies, apprenticeships, internships, or other non-traditional education) is considered. LUX focuses on manual (non-digital) arts only. Applicants should demonstrate passion for teaching, previous teaching experience, and willingness to teach a variety of media. Teaching experience with children (K-12) is helpful but not required.
International Artists
International artists may apply but must already have a visa that allows them to work. LUX is unable to sponsor visa applications. Artists-in-Residence are employees of LUX and must be able to receive pay for stipends and teaching compensation.
Selection Process
Residents are selected by a panel consisting of LUX staff members and current residents through virtual screening calls. LUX is able to host up to four residents at once and aims for a mix of skills and techniques (e.g., one potter, one sculptor, one drawer/painter, and one other media specialist). Artists working in multiple media formats are encouraged to apply.
Media Accepted
Manual (non-digital) media including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, fibers, paper-crafting, metals, mixed media, and similar. Artists will not be restricted to teaching in any one format and are encouraged to offer cross-discipline classes.
