Art Omi presents Tschabalala Self: Pioneer Red (2023), opening June 27, 2026 at the Sculpture & Architecture Park. The bronze sculpture was originally commissioned by Desert X. The artist describes the work as a "monument built in homage to the collective foremothers of contemporary America. Pioneer Red represents the lost, expelled, and forgotten Indigenous and African women…[who stand] as a beacon of resilience for their descendants—a visual representation of their birthright and place within the American landscape."
About the Artist
Tschabalala Self (b. 1990 Harlem, New York) lives and works in the Hudson Valley, New York. Self is an artist who uses painting, printmaking, and sculpture to explore figuration, depicting predominantly women using sewn, printed, and painted materials. Recent exhibitions include Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2025); Longlati Foundation, Shanghai (2025); Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland (2024); Kunstmuseum, St. Gallen (2023); Le Consortium, Dijon (2022); Performa 2021 Biennial (2021); Baltimore Museum of Art (2021); and ICA Boston (2020). Work is held in major collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Hammer Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and others.
