Annual awards to up to four traditional artists and one advocate
South Carolina

The Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award honors practitioners and advocates of traditional arts significant to communities throughout South Carolina. Presented by the South Carolina General Assembly, this annual award recognizes traditional artists who practice art forms transmitted through families and communities, as well as advocates who have worked to sustain and promote South Carolina traditions.

Up to four traditional artists and one advocate may receive awards each year.

  • Nominations for the 2027 cycle will open Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026

Nominations are accepted for traditional artists and arts organizations who practice art forms transmitted through families and communities and have demonstrated commitment to sustaining their traditions, or for individuals and groups who have provided service to sustain and promote South Carolina traditions (advocacy award). South Carolina residency required.
