About
Exhibition
Anthony Sonnenberg: Cannons Buried in Flowers is on view at GAVLAK, Los Angeles from May 20 – July 1, 2023. The exhibition features ceramic sculptures that combine clay structures with silk flowers, porcelain tchotchkes, and textile trimmings, finished with liquid ceramic slip and glazing in matte, glassy, and lustrous finishes.
About the Work
Sonnenberg's sculptures explore queer identity, camp aesthetics, and affect through decorative forms that challenge art-world hierarchies. His works, including pieces like Personal Monument with Pipe (2023), a three-foot-tall gravestone-shaped sculpture adorned with flowers, angels, and teddy bears, blur boundaries between art, craft, and design while addressing themes of mourning, memory, and self-determination.
