When an application is submitted, Mondriaan Fund staff check if forms are complete and all requested attachments have been uploaded. If not, you will be asked to supply additional information. The application is then checked against formal conditions stated in the explanatory notes and general terms and conditions. If formal requirements are met, the application is submitted to a panel of external experts for assessment, with quality and presentation plan/visibility as key criteria.

Mondriaan Fund advisory members are recruited through an open application procedure and selected by an independent selection committee. Members are experts such as artists, theorists, critics, curators, educators, and collectors from the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, knowledgeable in contemporary art, cultural heritage, and other specific areas. New experts are recruited each year and terms are rotated.

Committee members receive a digital copy of the application form, visual documentation, and relevant attachments before the meeting. The committee does not have access to personal income data. Proposals are judged based on the application form and documentation, with visual materials reviewable on a large screen during the meeting. Assessment follows criteria laid down in the grant explanatory notes. If needed, the committee may request supplementary information or, for individual artists, undertake a studio visit (Netherlands only).

The advisory committee advises the Board of the Mondriaan Fund on whether to offer financial support. The Board cannot offer support without a positive committee ruling. After the Board ratifies the decision, the applicant is notified within a week. The total application procedure can take up to 3 months after a fully completed application is submitted, though processing time may be longer due to high application volume.
