Amsterdam, Netherlands

NIAS offers established and talented researchers working in social sciences, humanities, and arts the space, time, and freedom to pursue urgent research topics based on their academic knowledge and experience. The institute also engages writers, journalists, and artists in collaborative research environments.

Researchers may apply for five- or ten-month fellowships to work unencumbered and undisturbed from daily university commitments such as teaching and management tasks.

NIAS aims to create a balanced year group in terms of gender, region, and disciplines. Half of fellows come from Netherlands institutions, half from outside the Netherlands. The maximum number of fellowship places during the 10-month academic year is 30, though the total number of researchers per year is around 50 due to shorter fellowships.

The institute offers offices, research facilities, library services, and accommodation to fellows. Researchers from Netherlands universities can apply for a teaching replacement fund. International fellows are eligible for a stipend and accommodation subsidy.

Applicants for regular fellowships are evaluated by external reviewers based on the quality and innovative value of the research proposal. Co-sponsored candidates are put forward by sponsors. Final selection creates a balanced year group across gender, region, and disciplines.
