About this grant
This grant supports publicly accessible museums wishing to make structural purchases of art and/or design created after 1945 based on their collection programs and acquisitions plans. The aim is to increase the quality, coherence and visibility of the Netherlands Art Collection.
What may be funded
Major acquisitions that fit into the museum's collection plan and are displayed to the public on a permanent or semi-permanent basis. Museums may alternatively commission a visual artist to create one or more works of art for the collection, as part of their acquisition plans.
Eligibility
Publicly accessible Dutch institutions listed with the Museums Register managing a substantial collection of contemporary visual art and/or design. Private museums, art schools, and post-academic institutions are not eligible.
Requirements
- Permanent acquisition budget of at least €50,000 per year (public or private funding)
- At least 50% of budget must be spent on Dutch artists or artists assimilated into the Dutch art scene
- Must loan objects to Dutch institutions under the Basic Principles for Smarter Loan Transactions
- Acquisitions remain part of the Dutch National Cultural Heritage Collection without ownership transfer without Mondriaan Fund authorization
- Must guarantee preservation through proper construction, climate control, and security
- Must subscribe to Fair Practice Code, Culture Governance Code, and Diversity & Inclusion Code

Application
Submit through the Mondriaan Fund's online application system. You must have an account to access the application form and upload requested documentation.
Assessment
Applications are assessed by a committee on acquisition policy, fit with collection plan, collaborative value, and importance to the Netherlands. Due to limited budget, not all positively assessed applications receive funding. Committee ranks approved applications by priority.
Status
This is the old grant (2021-2024). Applications are currently closed. The new grant for the 2025-2028 policy plan period will be published online soon.
