MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts

MASS MoCA introduces teen audiences to artistic voices through programs emphasizing joy, exploration, visibility, and fresh perspectives. The museum endeavors to incubate the next generation of artists and creatives.

A distinctive opportunity for local teens to engage with the museum as empowered student leaders. Cohorts of 10–15 students in 11th and 12th grades engage in intensive programming for 8–10 weeks, developing skills in leadership, collaboration, analysis, and communication. Activators meet 2–3 times per week to develop literacy in visual and performing arts, nurture their own creative practices through workshops and artist engagement, and gain professional skills through long-term, processual projects.

Summer cohorts work on a longer timeline and assist with Camp MASS MoCA. Spring cohorts are on a shorter timeline and focus on the development and production of the Teen Invitational. Each cohort experiences different workshops aligned with current exhibitions and programs.

An annual, weekend-long celebration featuring an exhibition with over 250 works of visual art and music performances by students and teachers from ten high schools in the northern Berkshires. The Invitational highlights young people engaged with the visual and performing arts, inside or outside school settings.

Support for the Teen Invitational is provided by the Avangrid Foundation in partnership with Berkshire Gas, with additional support from the Cooper Meadow Fund.
