The Town of Silverthorne Art Board seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to design and install an original mural on the indoor wall adjacent to the east end of the indoor track at the Silverthorne Recreation Center. The mural should celebrate Silverthorne's landscape, energy, and active lifestyle through a bold, dynamic design that inspires movement and connection.

The wall is approximately 83 feet long and 12 feet high (approximately 996 square feet). The mural should cover at least 75% of this area and can wrap around the left corner. A 4'x4' area in the far-left corner, about 2 feet up from the floor, must be reserved for medicine balls and should be painted black or left out of the artwork.

  • Silverthorne's geography: incorporate maps, topographic lines, or references to the local landscape and surrounding mountains
  • The Blue River as a central visual element, emphasizing movement and connection
  • Bringing the outdoors in: show views from outside the track area
  • Vibrant, colorful, bright, and energizing designs
  • Strength, balance, and wellness
  • Rhythmic elements reflecting adrenaline or heartbeat to initiate flow state
  • Mixed media within painted murals, including graphic collage, photographs, relief elements, topography, etc.
  • July 21: Call posted
  • August 21: Entry deadline
  • August 21–28: Committee reviews applications
  • September 4: Notification to artists of final selection
  • October 31: Installation completion deadline

The honorarium is $20,000 total, which constitutes full compensation for all services, goods, expenses, and materials for the design, creation, and installation of the mural. Payment will be made 50% upon signing of contract and 50% upon mural completion.

Artists are required to submit at least one and no more than three conceptual renderings of proposed artwork, and at least one and no more than four links to examples of their completed work that depict the artistic style they intend to use for the project.

  • Suitability of design for site
  • Aesthetic quality
  • Broad-based interest and appeal for all ages
  • Quality of artist's previous works

The Art Board seeks artists in the Colorado region, as travel reimbursement funds are not available. Artists outside of Colorado are welcome to apply if they can cover travel and lodging costs for the project.

For questions or to view the wall in person before submitting, contact Sydney Drake at [email protected] or 970-262-7390.
