Overview

The Mondriaan Fund offers Publication grants to visual artists and publishers to produce special and innovative publications about the work of living visual artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Grants stimulate knowledge and dissemination of contemporary art amongst Dutch and international audiences.

What we fund

Publications about the professional practice of living artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, including oeuvre publications as an artist's reflection on their work, publications about the visual results of artistic research, first publications about emerging talent, or opinion publications reflecting on artistic practice.

Key dates

• Submission deadline: 30 July 2026, before 16:00 (Dutch time zone) / 10:00 (Caribbean time zone)
• Applications accepted twice yearly; other deadline: 29 January, before 16:00 (Dutch time zone) / 11:00 (Caribbean time zone)
• 3-month processing period follows the deadline

Eligibility

• Visual artists and publishers (may apply jointly or individually)
• Publication must relate to one or more living visual artists active in the professional visual art practice in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom
• Featured artist(s) must have been professional visual artists for at least 1 year
• Applicants cannot be enrolled in degree programmes (bachelor's, master's, or post-academic programmes)
• Publication cannot be about a historical subject or development
• Artists' books with editions of up to 3 copies are not eligible (use the Artist Project grant instead)

Award

Grant amount is determined per application based on the budget. The maximum grant offered by the Mondriaan Fund is 35% of eligible expenses. The available budget for this round is €205,000.

How to apply

Submit applications using the Mondriaan Fund online application system. You need an account before submitting. If multiple artists apply for the same publication, each must submit a separate application. Please note: it is not possible to upload documents after the deadline has passed. Applications that have not been submitted in full will not be processed.

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff check that submitted applications and attachments are complete. Complete applications are submitted to the advisory committee, which assesses the artistic performance of the artist(s), the quality of the plan, and the visibility of the publication. A Publication grant can only be awarded if the committee makes a positive recommendation on both artistic performance and plan quality. Due to budgetary restrictions, not all positively-advised applications may receive grants.

Fair Pay requirement

Applicants are expected to comply with Fair Pay requirements. Other parties working on the project must receive remuneration in line with applicable collective labour agreements or guidelines. If a publisher is involved, a realistic remuneration for the artist must be included in the budget.
