About
Overview
The Austrian Federal Ministry for Housing, Art, Culture, Media and Sport (BMWKMS), in cooperation with the Research Center of the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, invites applications for research stipends to study artist estates and artistic production in Austria across visual art, photography, media art, graphic art, sculpture, and applied art. The goal is to promote scholarly research on Austrian or Austria-based artists and support researchers in documenting and preserving these cultural legacies while filling research gaps.
Eligibility
Applicants must be pursuing a Master's degree or PhD thesis at a university on this topic. Researchers from the EU are equally eligible as Austrian applicants. The artist or artistic work being researched must have been born or created no more than 100 years ago.
Award & Duration
The stipend is awarded for 6 months and amounts to 9,000 EUR (net).

Applications must be submitted by 30 September 2026 via email.
Application Requirements
- Completed and signed application form (Forschung im Bereich Vor- und Nachlässe - Künstlerische Produktion in Österreich) plus data protection agreement
- Work proposal (abstract, max. 3,000 characters including spaces) describing the artist or topic of focus, 4–10 images of works, and max. 5 internet links to supplementary information
- Curriculum vitae with date and place of birth and citizenship
- Letter of acceptance from supervising professor(s) at an Austrian university (EU universities recognized as equivalent)
- List of applicant's previous scientific publications
- Email subject line must include: Last name, first name, 'Forschung im Bereich Vor- und Nachlässe - Künstlerische Produktion in Österreich'
Submission Instructions
All documents must be organized in a single email with five separately labeled attachments: Bewerbungsformular, Abstract, Person, Bestätigung der Akzeptanz, Liste der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten. Email size must not exceed 10 MB. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The application and all attachments must be signed electronically via ID Austria (recommended) or by statutory declaration confirming accuracy of information and agreement with call conditions.
