Prix Ars Electronica is one of the world's highest-endowed competitions for media art. Artists may submit projects in seven categories: Computer Animation/Film/VFX, Interactive Art, Digital Musics, Hybrid Art, Digital Communities, u19 - freestyle computing, and Media.Art.Research Award.
Categories
- Computer Animation/Film/VFX: Independent art and science works as well as commercial high-end productions from film, advertising, and entertainment industries; judged on artistic originality and technical quality.
- Interactive Art: Installations, performances, and web projects; emphasis on artistic quality of interaction design, coherence between content and interaction principles, and sociopolitical relevance.
- Digital Musics: Digital sound productions of all kinds; emphasis on aesthetics, originality, conceptual level, innovation in expression, and presentation quality.
- Hybrid Art: Works that cross boundaries between art and science, remixes, and mashups of different genres and artistic forms.
- Digital Communities: Projects addressing social impact of the Internet, social software, ubiquitous computing, mobile communication, and wireless networks; focus on innovation in human collaboration, bridging digital divides, cultural diversity, and artistic freedom.
- u19 - freestyle computing: Austria's largest computer competition for children and youth; any computer-created or designed work accepted, including animations, graphics, drawings, sounds, games, software and hardware applications, and websites.
- Media.Art.Research Award: Outstanding theoretical works on media art, awarded by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute; in 2008 focusing on interactive art forms.
