About
Craigardan invites applications from emerging and accomplished artists to participate in a focused residency of 2 weeks or longer to create new work, complete projects, conduct research, or find inspiration and creative community.
Overview
Set on 320 acres of forest and working farm bordered by Hurricane Mountain Wilderness, Craigardan's residency program sits at the intersection of place, purpose, and process. The program provides time for independent yet supported work within a specific area of focus while encouraging cross- and interdisciplinary exploration and creative dialogue.
Residency Details
- Residency length: 2 weeks to 3 months
- 6–10 artists in residence at a time
- Collaborative applications accepted
- All residents awarded substantial fellowship; additional financial aid available through named fellowships and work exchange opportunities
Who May Apply
Open to emerging and accomplished artists worldwide at any stage of career. Craigardan welcomes ceramic, literary, visual, and performance artists, as well as farmers, chefs, activists, scholars, and researchers from the Adirondack region and around the world.
Housing & Meals
- Private housing on campus (individual apartment/cabin/house)
- Partially accessible (50% or more)
- Meals provided: family meal each week with staff and guest chefs using seasonal, organic ingredients from farm and partner farms; some other meals provided; groceries available for residents to prepare their own meals
Studios & Facilities
- Private studios and dedicated studio/shop spaces
- Ceramics workspace: electric wheels, kick wheels, slab roller, clay mixers, plaster room, electric kiln, gas kiln
- Painting workspace with easels and supplies
- Woodworking tools and other specialized studios
- Exhibition/installation space
- Free access to all programs, classes, and lectures
Resident Expectations & Opportunities
- Prepare 10–15 minute presentation for weekly Applebarn Series to share work and process with local public and fellow residents
- Option to participate in public programming
- Teach in studio, lead workshops for public or fellow residents, lead skill shares in cooking, pottery, farming, writing, etc.
- Participate in community events including summer Applebarn Series
- Access to hiking, biking, local exploration, and swimming
Location & Setting
Located in the remote Adirondack region, 4 miles from Elizabethtown, 6 miles from Keene and Keene Valley, and 25 minutes from Lake Placid. Campus features two mountain streams, many miles of trails, and proximity to Adirondack Park's High Peaks. Residents experience dark skies, wildlife, and ever-changing mountain weather in an untamed, quiet, extremely rural setting.
