Oscar Santillán is an artist-in-residence with a MA in Sculpture and Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University, working on a project called DAPHNIA that explores cybernetics and transspecies intelligence.

The project investigates what conceptual and technological interfaces can enable the encounter of biological, artificial, and indigenous notions of intelligence. Building on cybernetician Stafford Beer's 1960s attempt to create a 'biological computer' using water fleas (daphnia), Santillán explores Andean cosmologies of 'Earthbeing' (Tirakuna in Quechua) - ecosystems capable of generating their own subjectivity - to develop a radical transspecies computer that expands on Beer's enterprise.
