International Collaborative Projects with Heritage Institutes - Mondriaan Fund

Overview

Research grant for cultural heritage institutions in the Netherlands and Caribbean part of the Kingdom collaborating with foreign heritage institutions on research projects in shared collection areas. The aim is to stimulate new insights and international collaborations in cultural heritage that result in presentation.

Eligible Applicants

Museums and heritage institutions that are publicly accessible, manage cultural heritage of national significance, and have entered into partnerships with similar cultural heritage institutions abroad.

Funding Amounts

The amount of the grant will be determined per application. The Mondriaan Fund can contribute up to 40% of variable project costs for research projects. For development research, applicants may request up to 70% of variable project costs, to a maximum of €15,000.

Deadlines

• Submission deadline: Thursday 28 May 2026 before 16:00 (Dutch time) / 10:00 (Caribbean time)
• Submission deadline: Thursday 10 September 2026 before 16:00 (Dutch time) / 10:00 (Caribbean time)
• Processing takes 3 months after deadline; grants cannot be awarded retroactively

Application Requirements

Submit a project plan explaining the collaboration and research focus, a presentation plan showing how audiences will be engaged, a detailed budget with declaration that research cannot be financed through other means, and pledges from international and other Dutch organizations participating in the study.

Assessment Criteria

The advisory committee assesses applications based on: significance of the research and quality of the research plan; how the plan contributes to new and relevant insights in the heritage sector; significance of involved institutions and added value of international collaboration; relevance of institutional positions to research; and whether there is a shared area of collection focus.

Key Conditions

The applicant must make a significant financial contribution to project costs. Applications are stronger if funds have been raised through crowd-funding. The foreign partner's share of project costs must be in acceptable proportion to the grant awarded. Presentation costs of international partners are not eligible for funding. A grant can only be awarded if the advisory committee issues a positive recommendation, though budget restrictions may prevent awarding all positively recommended applications.
